The Escort continued

Continued this painting. I expanded the canvas because I felt that it was a little cramped. Trying to get the right feel for color and texture in the background while maintaining the composition is.... hard. It's surprising how much of a difference the formations of leaf clumps in the trees affect the flow of the image.

New Painting Started

I finally got my computer running, and the day i did I spent 5 straight hours painting because I was so deprived. I was scanning some more stuff to post on this blog including this plan for a painting, and I couldn't help it and started immediately. I'm trying to work on simplifying my shadows and putting contrast only in the areas of interest. Not done at all, I'm probably gonna set that background back a lot more, add a lot more detailing I think to their costumes, etc.

The Greatest Predator in the Universe

Ugh. Haven't updated in a month, EMBARRASSING. kinda hard when you don't have a personal computer after moving though.

God Emperor in worm form, plus the drawing in my sketchbook it's based on. Bonus Hwi Noree action on the bottom there. I guess I was going for a smokey Frazetta vibe, with the incense burning in his big lonely chamber. This was quick, i consider these studies for the bigger painting I'm doing. The greatest predator in the universe!

9 Lives - Sketch

I couldn't help myself.

Saw Batman: Dark Knight Rises of course, and as expected it was dope. Now I fanartz. I was actually a fan of how Catwoman was handled in the movie, unexpectedly. I won't review it, but I will say it's somewhere between Begins and Dark Knight in awesome quality.

More dumps. Top one was done during my visit to Hong Kong  a few months ago. Bottom left... I dunno, heads. The bottom right is an old character of mine that is basically an Indian superhero, just something I had been noodling on and off for a while and I didn't know what to do with it sooo i'm just posting it for now. Sans clothes.

Alright i need to pick up the pace, I'm starting to slow down. I wanted to be posting something once a week but I got distracted by all this job stuff. Here's a sketch dump. The dreadlock girl in the top image was doodled while I was playing D&D for the first time, she was my half-elf druid. The lizard guy on the bottom is when i was playing Skyrim with my Argonian ranger. *pushes up glasses*

Got a new job at Turbine, which is now owned by Warner Brothers. Part of it is very familiar, part of it is really different. I've been put on their new project which is completely different from anything the studio has done before, it's really nuts.

Due to recent events, I have a lot more spare time on my hands so I can get back to working on stuff I haven't touched in a while. Apparently I haven't updated this chestnut since February, so I got on the case. I couldn't find a hand pose that was perfect so I had to combine a few and then look up what hands covered in blood looked like separately. I think in general I need to add more atmosphere, especially to the face, now that the rest has become so loose.

More Dune!

I've been trying to come up with a Steersman design for a while, this is the closest so far.

Here's the original description, summed up nicely by Wikipedia:

 ...a "humanoid fish," and described in his tank of spice gas as "an elongated figure, vaguely humanoid with finned feet and hugely fanned membranous hands — a fish in a strange sea."


 ...they possess a "tiny v of a mouth" and "ugly flap of nose" and that "Mouth and nose appeared small on a Navigator's gigantic face with its pulsing temples."


I wanted to make this creature interesting with contrasts; a round belly with an angular, lanky figure, appearing old and yet still undeveloped, frail but threatening for some reason. Although they are incredibly powerful they are also driven by their addiction to spice, so it was important to illustrate that they are driven by greed as much as they are by intellectual pursuits.

Technically they are even supposed to wear a leotard and a utility belt, but I might take some artistic liberties and do away with that... I dunno we'll see.

Another dump of sketches. Again, these are from over a few sketch books, most of the ones on the top are from my head and the obviously posey ones on the bottom are from life. I thought I'd keep up with the themes, so this time it's all girls! Yeeey!

Callie Started

Workin' on Callie Maggotbone from Ugly Americans. I love this show, and I wanna finish this before the season is over. Bonus, there's tentacles in it!

So. I got a scanner.

After 6 years as a professional artist, I finally have my own scanner. How sad is that? Pretty sad. Contrary to popular belief I DO actually use physical (analog? so pretentious) media often, but mostly it's all in my sketchbooks and nothing ever finished. To start, here is a collection of stuff from Dune.

From top left - Laza tigers; Fremen costume; Shai Hulud; princess headdresses; krysknives; chairdog; old steersman concept (outdated, I've since redesigned them based on the book descriptions more closely); Alia, from a scene in Children of Dune.

I'll post more later once I get them arranged.

Ritual Update

More progress on this thing. Man, once I start doing freelance my schedule for updating goes right down the toilet.

I bumped the contrast and colors like crazy, figured I could do something interesting with the incense smoke. Still afraid to touch those handles right now.

Foul (or should i say eligible?) Bachelor Frog. To decorate our house with. I got a frame and everything.

Jogger sketch

I wanted to play with the contrast of matte clothing vs shiny skin. Joggers are sexy, but it seems boring to me. I'd rather dance instead, it's like jogging in place.

Random dump of a couple of things I've been working on. Top is my friend Noah making chicken and waffles, the second is me being bored of conversations leading nowhere. I need to update more.

Now with underboob.

More blood on pagan cave girls, it's like a thing I do now. I am honored to know the empowered women I've met, but you should know that you're all very intimidating and fascinating to me. I think that's where these come from. We'll see where this one goes!

Rosy Hills

Been working on this, trying to be more fast and painterly. This was inspired by an old drawing I had done many years ago but never quite painted. I was motivated to render it after some recent events.

Alia Takes a Bath, part II

This is a continuation of the livestream painting. I really enjoy this one, although the perspective on the bathtub is killing me. Every time I make a composition change with the bathtub I have to adjust the perspective. This is why you figure this crap out in the beginning instead of later :( The black nebulus in the background will probably fade off into a galaxy-looking kind of abstractness.
